Selection Process and Exam Pattern

1. Computer-Based Written Test (100 marks, 2 hours)

General Knowledge: 50 objective questions, 50 marks. English Composition (objective): 20 questions, 20 marks. English Composition (subjective, typed on computer): 30 marks — essay of 150 words (10 marks), letter (5 marks), precis (5 marks), and translation from Punjabi to English (10 marks). There is negative marking in the objective questions: 0.25 marks are deducted for every wrong answer, while unattempted questions carry no credit or deduction. Candidates must secure at least 33% marks in each subject and at least 40% marks in aggregate in the written test to qualify. The subjective English Composition answers are checked only for candidates who secure at least 33% marks in General Knowledge. If the test is held in multiple shifts, the objective scores are normalised by the standard deviation method given in the notification.

2. Computer Proficiency Test — Qualifying Only

Candidates who qualify in the written test are called, category-wise as decided by the High Court, for the Computer Proficiency Test. Part I is a Spreadsheet Test of 10 marks in 10 minutes, in which at least 4 marks (40%) are required. Part II is an English typing test at 30 words per minute, checked only for candidates who secure at least 4 marks in Part I. The Computer Proficiency Test is qualifying in nature and its marks are not counted in the final merit. Eligible Persons with Benchmark Disabilities may apply for exemption from this test, with the prescribed certificates, within 15 days of declaration of the written test result.

3. Checking of Original Testimonials and Final Merit

Candidates who qualify in both the written test and the Computer Proficiency Test are called for checking of original testimonials and interaction. The select list is prepared strictly on merit in the computer-based written test. In case of equal marks, the candidate elder in age is placed higher; if the date of birth is also the same, candidates are placed alphabetically. A provisional answer key is published after the written test, with an opportunity to raise objections at Rs. 25 per objection, and to file cross-objections.
